Contracts & Risk Management for Small Business Owners & Entrepreneurs

The Pace University Small Business Development Center hosted a webinar with Dr. Jessica A. Magaldi to introduce small business owners and entrepreneurs to issues related to contracts and risk management, including the importance and significance of:

• Contracts and mutual assent

• Risks and responsibilities of the contractual relationship

• Assessing business risk for working with Letter Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding, Letters of Intent, and other less formal contract documents

• Understanding key contractual elements and clauses to mitigate risk and spot issues on which to seek legal assistance

• Working effectively with counsel.

Building a Small Business Website (at the New York Public Library)

Pace SBDC hosted another website building workshop! This was an in-person, no-cost, two-hour event at the Thomas Yoseloff Business Center at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library at 455 Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

​This workshop gave entrepreneurs an opportunity to begin building a website for their small business. The workshop started by defining their website goals and sketching out the site on paper. Then, went into choosing a platform, determining workflow, and the actual website building. All skill levels and stages of business are welcome at these events!

Crowdfunding Workshop Series

Joining the Pace University Small Business Development Center (Pace SBDC) and Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) for a series of hands-on, online trainings focused on crowdfunding has concluded.

Session One: Was Crowdfunding for Me? (April 11, 6pm)

In this session, we discussed what crowdfunding was, how it happened, and how entrepreneurs could prepare both their networks and their businesses for a successful crowdfunding raise.

Session Two: Explored Crowdfunding Platforms (April 18, 6pm)

In this session, we learned about the different forms of crowdfunding, what types of businesses and projects each form was best suited for, and we heard from several different platforms about their offerings and how to find success using their platform.

Session Three: Focused on Storytelling and Fundraising (April 25, 6pm)

This session focused on marketing campaigns and telling compelling stories that built trust with customers, confidence in businesses, and encouraged supporters to fund and share crowdfunding campaigns. We also heard from Crowdfund Better, a platform with additional resources and training on crowdfunding.

Session Four: After the Raise (May 2, 6 pm)

In our final session, we explored creative ways of leveraging crowdfunding towards other financing vehicles. We also discussed strategies for keeping supporters engaged and carrying the momentum from a campaign into long-term business success.

Website Workday (at Brooklyn Public Library)

The Pace University SBDC and Brooklyn Public Library's Business & Career Center hosted a no-cost, two-hour, IN-PERSON website editing workshop at the Brooklyn Public Library Business & Career Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza, 2nd Floor.

The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to work on their small business' websites with the assistance of business advisors. The event included some quick information on SEO and best online practices, but the workshop mainly focused on editing and improving each participant's website. All skill levels, industries, and stages of business were welcome. Participants were asked to have the username and password of their websites handy to participate in this hands-on workshop.

Non-Disclosure Agreements: When Should You Require an NDA, When Should You Sign an NDA

The Pace University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hosted a webinar with Dr. Jessica A. Magaldi, where she informed small business owners and entrepreneurs on non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). Attendees learned about the importance and significance of elements including:

• Risks that an NDA could help mitigate (and risks that an NDA wouldn’t mitigate)

• Understanding key contractual provisions of an NDA;

• How to protect your small business with an NDA

• How to protect yourself as an individual who is asked to sign an NDA.

Una de las dudas mas comunes de los emprendedores es saber qué permisos y licencias su negocio necesita para funcionar en la Ciudad y Estado de NY, en esté taller se explicará como encontrar las agencias a las que se deben dirigir pará hacer la aplicación y también cómo encontrar un asesor de la Ciudad que le haga una evaluación a su negocio para saber si cumple o no con los requerimientos gubernamentales.

Evaluating Best Business Practices

The Pace SBDC partnered with the NYS Center for Disability Entrepreneurship at the Farmingdale SBDC to present "Evaluating Best Business Practices."

Prior to the webinar, the organizers inquired if anyone attending or their family members lived with a disability. They aimed to assist those interested in starting their own business.

The webinar, which lasted one hour, covered the necessary steps to initiate and expand a business. It provided insights into various business formations, tax and legal obligations, methods of record-keeping, and employer responsibilities.

NELP Remote Small Business Legal Clinic

The City Bar Justice Center’s Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project (NELP) partnered with the Pace SBDC and the Brooklyn Public Library’s Business & Career Center to offer a virtual small business legal clinic. This clinic, conducted by NELP, was an opportunity for entrepreneurs to meet with a team of pro bono attorneys to discuss legal issues related to their small businesses, such as intellectual property rights, contracts/agreements, business structure and incorporation, commercial leasing and more. NELP's small business legal clinics provide entrepreneurs with free legal advice during a 45-minute consultation.

What Entrepreneurs Need to Know About Contracts

The BPL Business & Career Center partnered with the City Bar Justice Center’s Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project (NELP) and PACE Universirty SBDC to offer an opportunity for entrepreneurs to learn about important contract provisions. This virtual presentation helped small business owners understand the importance of executing contracts.

Summer Youth Employment Program Info Session

​​The Pace University SBDC and representatives from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development hosted a webinar on the Summer Youth Employment Program. It was an opportunity to have young people work in your business for six weeks during the summer with their HR needs and wages covered by the city. The info session covered the basics of the program, how to apply, and other key details. There was time for questions.
